Navigating Gray Areas with Confidence: A Helpful Overview of Dual Relationships, Coaching Considerations for Therapists, and Soliciting Reviews and Testimonials from Patients

Presenter: Bradley Jordan Muldrow, Esq., CAMFT Staff Attorney

    Date: Feb. 6, 2026

    Time: 9am – 12 pm PST

    Webinar Description:
Ever wonder why a lawyer’s favorite answer to just about any legal question is: “it depends”? Complex legal rules often create “gray area” scenarios which can be difficult to navigate without adequate guidance. In this three hour workshop, CAMFT staff attorney Bradley Muldrow, Esq. will provide helpful tips for navigating three law and ethics topics that are well known for encompassing multiple gray areas: dual relationships, coaching considerations for therapists, and soliciting reviews and testimonials from patients.

    Educational Goals:
Participants will learn how to recognize and navigate issues involving dual/multiple relationships. Participants will understand key legal and ethical issues therapists should consider when offering coaching services (in addition to their therapy services). Participants will recognize how the CAMFT Code of Ethics has changed to allow MFTs to solicit testimonials, and impliedly reviews, from certain patients, in appropriate circumstances. Participants will understand the concept of “undue influence” and how that understanding should shape their approaches to soliciting testimonials and reviews.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Participants will be able to name three key ethical issues to assess when determining the appropriateness of continuing treatment despite the presence of dual/multiple relationships.
    • Participants will be able to distinguish the primary function of therapy malpractice liability insurance from that of coaching liability insurance.
    • Participants will be able to state which patients MFTs may solicit testimonials, and impliedly reviews, from in appropriate circumstances.

    Registration Fees:

    Chapter Member $55 | CAMFT Member $60 | Non-Member $85
