This workshop provides mental health professionals with a yoga-based easy-to-use framework and tools that they can incorporate into their client assessment and treatment. No yoga background is required.

Over the past two decades, millions in the West have been turning to yoga as a healing modality. As far back as 2007, a U.S. National Health Interview Survey revealed that over 10% of the population used mind-body therapies such as yoga and tai-chi to address health issues (Archives of Internal Medicine, May 2011). In 2016, a comprehensive study (Yoga Alliance et al.) revealed that of the 36.7 million Americans practicing yoga that year, 37% reported starting yoga and 35% continuing it specifically for mental health benefits. In addition, 56% reported starting yoga and 53% continuing it for stress relief.

While talk therapy is often prized as the sole method via which to heal mental suffering, our experience of psychological pain starts in the body. We notice “butterflies” in the stomach area at times of nervousness or excitement, tightness in the chest at times of sadness, and tension in the shoulders at times of stress. This workshop provides mental health professionals with some simple tools from the modality of yoga that they can incorporate into their assessment and treatment. No yoga background is required.
